Dealing with an itchy scalp.

An itchy scalp is quite annoying and can get you into some embarrassing situations. Whether you’re in a meeting or on a date, an urge to itch your scalp can pop up and ruin the mood. And, trying to ignore it just doesn’t help. The urge only gets stronger the more you ignore it. 

If you’re frequently scratching your scalp, then it could be more than just regular dandruff. There could be various other factors that can cause an itchy scalp – bacterial infection, ringworm, dryness etc. It can even cause other problems such as excessive hair fall. There are many products in the market that you can try, but the common verdict seems to be that they don’t really work. These products can give temporary relief but they might stop being effective after a point.

However, there are a few home remedies that can give you relief from the problem.



1. Olive Oil

Olive oil is known to have anti-inflammatory properties. It also has skin-protecting agents that help in healing the infection on the scalp. The best way to use it is by heating olive oil for around 5-7 seconds in the microwave and applying it all over your head. Leave it overnight and rinse it in the morning. You can repeat this method twice a week for better results.

2. Aloe Vera

Aloe vera gel is a natural moisturizer and has anti-microbial & soothing properties. So, it protects from an itchy scalp. The best way to use it: Take aloe vera gel and apply it directly to your scalp. Leave it for 15-20 minutes and wash it with lukewarm water. Repeat this process twice a week to see better results.

3. Baking Soda 

Baking soda has both anti-fungal and anti-bacterial properties. These properties help to kill infection-causing bacteria. It also helps to stop hair fall or itchiness. You just need 2-3 tablespoons of baking soda and water. Add both the ingredients to a bowl and mix until it becomes like a thick paste. Take the paste and spread it over your scalp, keep it on for 10 to 15 minutes. After completion, you can wash your hair with a regular shampoo.

4. Tea Tree oil

Tea tree oil has anti-fungal and anti-bacterial properties. It helps in treating the itchiness by moisturizing and nourishing the scalp. For best results, take 5-7 drops of oil and apply it directly to the scalp. Massage it thoroughly for few minutes and leave it overnight. Wash it off in the morning and enjoy the results.

5. Coconut Oil

Coconut is loaded with anti-fungal properties that can treat itchiness and fungal infections very well. Oiling the hair with coconut oil can help balance moisture. Best way to use it: take the coconut oil and heat it for 10 seconds(warm). Apply it over your head and allow it to stay for 15 mins. Rinse off once it’s done.
